Journey Through the Psalms
he Psalms are a journey into history, the heart and the heavenly realms. In this course, we will set out on an ancient adventure, which many before us have undertaken, never to be the same again - a journey on which we hope to encounter Christ. We humbly ask Him to travel with us, to guide us and to reveal Himself to us as He did to the disciples on the Road to Emmaus. “And they said one to another, 'Did not our heart burn within us, while he talked with us by the way, and while he opened to us the Scriptures?'” (Luke 24:32) What do the Church Fathers say about the Psalms? Why have the Psalms always been the prayer book of the Church? How do we enter into the Psalms so we are able to pray them? What is required of us?
As we engage with the entire Psalter we will read St. Athanasius’ A Letter to Marcellinus on the Psalms and Christ in the Psalms by Fr. Patrick Reardon. We will talk about the Psalms as poetry, how to dive deeply into a single Psalm, and how to pray them in a broader way. Homework will be minimal. Students will be asked to keep a journal of their journey through the Psalms.
