Fall 2020 Late-Start Class

Russian Church Singing

The influence of the Russian church singing tradition extends beyond Russian Orthodox Christianity and the Russian-rooted Orthodox Church in America, to the many other Orthodox Churches and jurisdictions, and even to secular classical music! This course will cover the historical development and content of the Russian Orthodox chant repertoire, and the practical execution of Russian-style chant in the English-speaking Orthodox Church. Students will learn the system of ‘eight tones’ and some of the fixed hymnography, coming away prepared to sing the main services of the Eastern Orthodox Church in English with beauty, confidence, and clarity. Previous musical experience is helpful, but not necessary. Students will be required to sing alone during class.
