Course Not Offered in 2020 – 21.

High School Russian IV

As the culminating course in the Russian series at CLRC, students will gain the highest level of facility and independence in the language that we offer, as well as the deepest level of engagement with Russian history, literature, music, art, and culture. Having completed three full years (or the equivalent) in the study of Russian language and civilization, students in Russian III will have gained enough proficiency in the language and familiarity with the culture to be able to interact with Russian society on its own terms.

This course will develop and build up these cultural literacies and skills, and will further develop students’ ability to comprehend and interpret complex Russian utterances and texts. We will continue to stay focused on the mystery and wonder – and sometimes the horror – of Russian history, literature, and culture in order to begin to more fully assimilate the optimal cultural mindset for navigating this intricate and endlessly fascinating civilization.

Russian III is paired with lectures and guidebooks from the Great Courses Plus, on online educational lecture service. Students are required to subscribe to The Great Courses Plus in order to access the downloadable guidebooks and lectures for several of their courses on Russian history, literature, and culture, which we will be using and discussing throughout the year. See the textbook section below for directions for subscribing.
